Why was Angel (from Buffy the vampire slayer) good?

Does anyone know why Angel (from Buffy the vampire slayer) was good? was he always good from the very start of the series? And did he ever go bad at any point?

Ok brief explanation for you.

Angel (or Angelus) Killed a gypsy princess soon after he was turned into a vampire (by Darla), the shaman of the gypsy tribe put a curse on him which made him regain his soul.
This made him feel the pain of the people that he had previously murdered and he turned to good.

He lost his soul after he experienced a moment of true happiness (ie him and Buffy sleeping together) and returned to his murderous ways. Miss Calendar (an IT teacher at Sunnydale High) was a descendant of the gypsy shaman who cursed Angel and knew how to restore his soul. However it was Willow who worked it out, as Angel murdered Miss Calendar before she could return his soul to his body.

I think thats correct, I havent watched Buffy in years!!!
I seem to remember him losing his soul again in an episode of Angel, but can't really remember how.

Angel was good because the gypsies gave him his soul back, before he got his soul he was called Angellis and was a total bad ***....through out both Buffy and Angel there are times when he goes bad, due to loosing his soul, but they always make sure to give it back to him or find a way for it to return

A penitent vampire is an interesting character, that's why.

But Spike was more interesting.

you obviously havent been watching properly!! Angel was bad when he was first turned into a vampire and when he killed a gypsy woman she cursed him with a soul and therefore he know is good.

He was cursed by the gypsies. They gave him a soul. Yes, he did go bad. He has turned bad a few times on the Buffy series and the Angel series.

Hi angel was good because a Gypsies put a curse on him and gave him his soul.He started off good but became bad later on when he slept with Buffy which undid the curse as he felt a moment of love and pleasure(i think a while since i watched this episode).He turned good again just as Buffy had to kill him to save the world it was very sad and i cried!!! hope this helps from a former Buffy fanatic!!!

he killed a gypsy girl many many moons ago and as a punishment an old gypsy placed a curse on him which restored his soul so he felt the pain and guilt of all of his killings.

He did go bad a couple of times - once in Buffy when he and she slept together - he lost his soul and became Angellus.

once in Angel when a girl gave him an euphoric drug - and again he lost his soul (temporarily) to become Angellus again.

he really wasn't

because a couple hundred years ago he killed a young girl who wasa gypsy and her fellow gypsy clan of women cursed him by giving him back his soul so that any time he bites any human he feals their pain as he sucks thier blood. so he had to become good in a sense and instead of killing then protect them from other vampires and demons.

Angellis the real name of Angel was an evil Vampire a nasty bit of work. He killed a Gypsy girl meny meny years ago and for a punishment an old Gypsy probably the Father of the dead Gypsy girl placed a curse on him which restored his soul so he felt the pain and guilt of all he killed.
But one night he lost his soul when he and Buffy had sex in bed.But regained it at the end of the season with the help of Willow and Buffy pushing him into a vortex into another world.
Something on the same lines happened to Spike in the same way to get back his soul as he could not attack Buffy or the other Scooby Gang due to the chip in his head thanks to the Initiative.
