In Heroes Season 1, why did both Petrelli brothers have to die?

No spoilers please - just waytched Season 1 on DVD, and didn't understand why the didn't just kill the younger Petrelli, instead of flying into space and having them both die?

You really need to watch season two. It explains everything (okay, not everything). But if you don't want it to 'spoilered' (is that a word? guess it is now), no one can really tell you the answer to the question.

Before you read any other answers on here, I warn you that someone is going to ruin it for you. Please watch season two before asking this question.

Just keep watching...Peter did not know his powers full potential nor did he know how to control because he had so many. Nathan on the other hand only had one and he knew his power very well...Nathan knew if he did not do anything things would have been worst, that is what they think at least.

JUST KEEP WATCHING...but the ending of season 2 sucked.

Your question is excellent. The illogical nature of killing both brothers is clearly a ploy to get you to watch Season 2.

I think you're asking why Nathan flew Peter off, as opposed to some other solution like shooting Peter. The problem with shooting him is that if he had been shot, it wouldn't have necessarily stopped him. Look at what happened to Ted - his powers went nuts on him and burned down the Bennet house. It's possible that a bullet would have been melted before he was killed, which would just make things worse. The bullet would have to be lodged in his brain at just the right spot to kill him. They also had no way of knowing what would kill him temporarily and what would kill him permanently. Also, Claire was the only one who get close enough to shoot him without dying herself, and nobody wanted her to potentially live with the burden of having killed her uncle, who was also her hero. Since Peter couldn't control his powers and was in danger of exploding at any moment, Nathan was the only one who could at least do something to keep him from killing millions of people when he exploded, particularly with Hiro out of the picture.

Don't ask a question like this if you don't want spoilers. You, of course, know that Season 2 has now ended, so anything we tell you will be a spoiler.

Because they had to make the audience know that Nathan was a hero too, not just a flimsy political puppet.

They probably wanted people to tune into the premier of season 2 to see what has happened to them. Quite smart by the writers if you think about it. People would have to tune in to see what has happened to them. I have watched season 2, and without giving away any spoilers, it takes awhile just like season 1 to actually find out what happened because they jump ahead of the time. I think 6 or 7 episodes to find out what really went on. :)
