Why is capricorn a 'feminine' sign?

what would make a sign masculine or feminine?

and what does this have to bear on those born under this sign?

There are 12 signs. 6 are Masculine (Positive) and 6 are Feminine (Negative) signs. It is easy to determine which sign is which because it skips every other sign (Aries-Masc, Taurus-Fem, Gemini-Masc, Cancer-Fem... etc.)

Qualities that would represent Masculine signs are aggressiveness, talkative, social, optimistic. Feminine signs can be passive, submissive, motherly, nurturing, and pessimistic. All Air and Fire signs are Masculine. All Earth and Water signs are Feminine.

Masculine signs are compatible with all other Masculine signs and Feminine signs are compatible with Feminine. This is what they generally teach, but I find that Masculine/Feminine signs also get along because they tend to balance each other out the way real man and woman tend to do for each other.

In the case of Capricorn, however, it is the only Feminine sign that is considered to be ruled by a Masculine planet (Saturn). They can be aggressive, like the goat, and pushy. They have strong guidelines by which they live their life and are known for their ruthlessness in order to obtain their position at the top (Capricorn located literally at the Top of the zodiac wheel). How Cancer is considered the "Eternal Mother", Capricorn is considered the "Eternal Father"... still feminine enough to be emotional and nurturing, yet strong-willed and dominant enough to maintain the upper hand.

I don't think it's a very feminine sign! I think Cappys tend to hide their emotions, just like guys do, until they find a safe haven to dump it off on... Plus there's the tenacious workaholic streak, but then perhaps such industriousness has always been associated with men due to living in a patriarchal society...

I'd say Pisceans are very feminine, but that's because they're all about emotions and feelings. Cancers too, to some extent.

Half the zodiac is masculine (fire & air signs) while the other half is feminine (earth & water). This doesn't mean the men resemble women physically (!) but it does indicate the kind of energies exerted by the signs. Active masculine signs are more extroverted, outgoing, sociable and are the ones you see out there, more likely to be the more popular as well.

On the other hand, passive feminine signs are more inner-directed and introverted personalities and tend to retreat back into their caves when feeling threatened or experiencing mood swings. They are more comfortable with dealing with their feelings alone and need more space and time alone than the extroverted masculine signs. In contrast, the masculine signs are also more future oriented and are able to put the past behind them more easily.

Capricorn in particular is the start of the winter solstice and this is when everyone starts to hibernate and retreat from the harsh enviornment. Hence, Capcricorn with all the introverted qualities, even though a cardinal sign, likes to lead behind the scenes and not take centre stage or be int he limelights, unlike some of the other more fiery or social signs.
