if you know the artist could you please let me know. thanks Tough question. Of course this is all opinion, but I think it would be the ones that advanced and changed the music. Here's my list of the top of my head.
"Livery Stable Blues"- Original Dixieland Jazz Band
- Not great but the first jazz recording.
"Heebie Jeebies"- Louis Armstrong
"West End Blues"- Louis Armstrong
- In my opinion he's the one were all still imitating
"It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing"- Duke Ellington
- Hard to pick just one from Duke but this is sort of a theme song for him
"Jumpin' at the Woodside"- Count Basie
- Hard to pick just one from Basie but this is sort of a theme song for him
"A Night in Tunisia"- Bird and Diz
- An example of two of the best on their instruments and also two of the biggest innovators.
"So What"- Miles Davis
- Miles, Cannonball, and Trane plus that rhythm section all on one track. Enough said.
"Giant Steps"- John Coltrane
- People take entire classes at some colleges to really understand the harmonic breakthroughs Coltrane made on this one.
"A Love Supreme"- John Coltrane
- I know I'm kind of cheating but the whole album really deserves to be on this list.
"Bitches Brew"- Miles Davis
- Opened the door to all that followed. "St. James Infirmary" I think has to be on the list.
"I got rhythm."
"My funny valentine."
I don't know. There are so many movements. This is a fun question. St. James Infirmary
