Band help?

I need to learn how to "flutter tounge" in jazz band. I play trombone but any trumpet or anyone who knows feel free to answer. I need help! Please answer asap!

nah its not double tounging because i can do that but thnx

this is a tricky one, but a great example I've found is spike jones, flight of the bumblebee played on trombone, he uses flutter tounging quite a lot, it's a TKT TKT TKT sort of thing, have a look for it on youtube, I've seen it there

Do you mean like a super fast vibrato or double tonguing (that's for when you're playing super fast so you use both the tip and back of your tongue) or what?

Are you talking about vibrato Iplay the sax so I rarely do this, but I htink that you just move your tongue really fast to adjust the air flow

".....a sustained articulation in which the player places her tongue against the roof of her mouth, just above and behind the top teeth. When blowing, the airflow causes the tongue to separate from the roof of the mouth and the muscles cause the tongue to be restored to the roof. The resulting sound has an ethereal and "fluttering" quality. Ok for all sections, except tuba."
I'm a flute player and I tried this and I couldn't do it. I have a feeling it is something you must work at to learn, kind of like learning to roll your "r" when learning to speak Spanish. Good luck!

Flutter tonguing is when you do the action of "rolling your Rs" into the instrument.

It is NOT choosing to play one syllable (like T or K) followed by another. (that is 'double tonguing'). Flutter tonguing is much faster and not as calculated.

If you can "roll your Rs", you will already know how to do that - and it's really hard to explain (see below). If you can't do it, then it's likely you can do the throat version, which is like a dry gargle, and involves making a very throaty "growling" noise using that thing that hangs in the back of your throat. In my experience, you can do one or the other. I'm not sure whether this throat one would work on trombone, but it works on flute.

How to use your tongue - it's as if you're saying "RDRDRD" very very fast, almost to the point that it's involuntary. I get it started by blowing a strong stream of air, and then saying a "duh" sound - but you have to get your tongue flapping around in the stream of air, against the roof and the bottom of your mouth. Blowing is essential. When you are doing it, it will use plenty of air, and will sound like a cat purring.

It's not like double or triple tonguing like alot of people are saying. Practice playing on a mouthpeice or buzzing your lips and rolling an R at the same time. After you get that down move on to the intrument. Make sure you put lots of air into it. Like most things with trombone ( and other intruments) it just takes practice.
