Good Jazz song for Trumpet?

im trying to find a good Jazz song to do on Trumpet for a try out, but I don't know where to Begin, either a Jazz Song, or a classical song, I can play at like near intermidiate level, I guess. and Thx!

I'm assuming your ability is good, so I'll make a couple of suggestions, but first, it's not so much a matter of the tune in jazz, but how you approach the playing of it,
try something like 'round midnight, for a slowish easy to personalise tune, or maybe something more be bop, try so what, there's millions of tunes to try, but just start getting the melody right, then work on feel and improvisation.

any miles davis stuff.
i would say kind of blue.

'Round midnight, Miles Davis

No, not Miles Davis, his stuff is all about being obnoxiously jazzy. His philosophy was "I can play no wrong notes" therefore, he played whatever came out, and, although he is respected as an icon of jazz, his stuff wasn't that great, at least not for you to be using as an audition. You need to go to Amazon and look up 'Jamey Aebersold' He has dozens of book/CD combos that have music and advice. It's good stuff. As for legit literature, try something middle of the road like maybe Concert Etude or Petite Piece Concertante, or if you want more of a challenge, maybe some of the Hummel or Haydn Concerto.

please ignore jeets appraisal of miles davis' playing! miles was a master musician. try a piece from wayne shorter's "see no evil". excellent compositions with some great playing by freddie hubbard on trumpet.

I'll just suggest a song I played as a Sophomore in high school.

"Portrait of a Trumpet" by Sammy Nestico

Its a jazz based piece that I enjoyed playing then as much as I would today as a college level musician. Another plus is that the person grading/assessing your try-out probably hasn't heard this piece, or at least can't sing it backwards while sleeping like a lot of other trumpet standards.

Its is a little bit more of an obscure piece, not too many sites have it, and it might take a while to get, this is the most reasonable one I could find for you,

best of luck

Get a harmon mute and try "Sugar Blues".
No high range stuff, straight forward melody, and a chance to do the wah wah thing with the mute.

Suitable for a decent high school trumpet player...

My funny valentine by miles davis would be a great ballad if you needed one. It doesn't go that high but is beautifully expressive.

"So What" by Miles should impress everyone.

Clifford Brown - "Joy Spring"

A simple, yet moving song by Donald Byrd called "Jamie" on the Ethiopian Knights cd.
