Dont you Agree that Phil woods is very underated he is one of the very great great alto players?

In my opinion the best Alto player still living.

Absolutely. Phil has played probably with most every important jazz figure in the past 60 years. I would put Bird at the top of Alto players, but you can safely include Phil as a worthy successor to Parker - and ironically he married Chan Parker (Charlie Parker's widow).

At the very least he is one of the greatest bebop players - and I agree he doesn't always get the recognition he should - but I think sometimes that's due to alot of his great recordings coming later in his life - and many critics tend to overlook the stuff for the classics of the 40s 50s and early 60s.

He might be the best alto alive - so many of the great ones have passed on

Wow i totaly agree with you Idris he is my favorite saxophinist i have nearly every recording he has made i prefere his quartet work to his quintet work, he is a wonderfull player with a wonderfull sound.

He kinda reminds me of a Paquito D'Rivera. Phil's alright.

Phil is no doubt the greatest living Hard Bop/Post Bop altoist. Underrated? Not among the listeners and lovers of jazz, unless you count those who think Dave Koz and smooth jazz players are any good!
