Oh, please! This question is asked at least once a week. Check out 'Resolved Questions'.

For me, the "greatest players" are the ones I enjoy listening to the most. Therefore, my answer is not based on technique. That said, here are my favorite...

Eric Dolphy
Sam Rivers
Bobby Hutcherson
Jaki Byard
Booker Ervin
Tony Williams
Richard Davis
Charles Mingus
Charles Tolliver
McCoy Tyner

Thats my little opinion.

THANKS for asking.

Wes Montgomery

Antonio Carlos Jobin

Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong. I'm partial to the trumpet.

Don't forget Les Paul, possibly the single greatest contributor to all of modern music. Not only was he an incredible arranger and inventor (he invented the electric guitar and multitrack recording among other things), but he was (and still is) an unbelievable musician.
