What are some of the great jazz recordings from the 50s to the early 70s featuring the Hammond B3 Organ? |
My father-in-law is a big jazz fan, especially those recordings featuring the Hammond B3. I'd like to give him a CD as a present and would be open to suggestions meeting the above criteria. I would prefer an older recording, but would consider someone new with a classic sound. Thanks for all of your help. Brother Jack MC Duff on Prestige records my favor song is Rock Candy, I think a young George Benson is on there playing guitar. Don Patterson, organist a CD called Why Not very nice. The late great Jimmy Smith Back at the Chicken Shack, Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf, also Richard Groove Holmes his classic song Misty, Shirley Scott check her out from Philly, old school everyone of them. A true Classic Concert By The Sea by Earl Garner done in Carmel California, also check out Joey DeFranceso, One other classic recording is by the late great Dexter Gordon called American Classic check out the organ playing of Shirley Scott and also check out the late great Grover Washington Jr. the other horn along with the late great Dexter Gordon. One guy that comes to mind is Oscar Peterson. Oscar mainly played piano but this should do the trick. You can also try Lucky Peterson (modern day). No relation. Lucky plays Hammond B3 as well as guitar. Another Cat is Jack McDuff.. Love the Hammond.. Check out Joey DeFranchisco.. Not sure about his spelling of last name. but the guys a monster. Google him.. Well, there's all kinds of great organ jazz from the 60s and 70s. Start with Jimmy Smith's 'Damn!' or 'Back at the Chicken Shack', Charles Earland's 'Black Talk', Jimmy McGriff's 'Greatest Hits', Richard 'Groove' Holmes' 'Blue Groove', Larry Young's 'Unity' just to name a few. Larry Young's "Into Somethin" is quite an organ ripping album. Certainly any Jimmy Smith is a good call. For a New Orleans sound, try Joe Krown or Robert Walter. And for a very contemporary/funky approach to organ, check out the Benevento/Russo Duo. Check out John Novello with the group Niacin. The Happy Organ....Dave "Baby" Cortez (60's) Man do I love the Hammond B3. A guy in our college dorm had one and took up his entire room along with 1 Leslie. He would play, practice for hours and I was hooked. Anything buy leon spencer. Charles Earland Leaving this Planet, Lonnie Smith Think and Drives, and Richard "Groove" Holmes "Onsaya Joy". There is a song called song for my father on that cd. |
