A question for Roland Kirk fans?

On the album "Gifts and messages" recorded at Ronnie Scotts, Roland Talks about playing both instruments at the same time (i know he could play three and a nose flute all togtherer but on this track he plays two) He mentions not using a reed, My question is which instrument did he not use a reed on was it the stritch or the Manzello and how did he play it without a reed? What did he do?

I have that album to Idris and you are correct its the manzello or the strich that hes talking about, i have no idea how he did it, ill ask Nik Bak for you when i see him, if anyone will no he will, hope you had a good weekend.

Wow Ajax are fantastic they are really sort after nowadays, there are people trying to copy them but it just cant be done, my dad had one years ago he said it sounded amazing. Report It

The 'stritch' was a modified straight alto sax and the 'manzello' was a modified saxello, or semi-curved soprano, with the bell extending at a 90-degree angle at the bottom. Both of those would require reeds, so I cannot imagine any sound production otherwise. Maybe he was referring to the nose flute?

Not 100 percent certain, but I think he played the manzello by humming into the open hole where the mouthpiece attached. This humming technique was one he used on other instruments as well.

What a fantastic musician and artist.
