Finger picks or Regular picks for new electric guitar player? |
I started out as an acoustic guitar player and have gotten used to playing without a pick. I have only used my fingernail to play the acoustic. Now I've recently moved on to playing an electric guitar. I know that a pick is necessary for playing an electric, however, I am not used to playing with a pick because I can't get the feel of the strings. My question is --- Would it be best if I were to use a finger pick since I'm still trying to get accustomed to playing the electric? Or should I stick with a regular pick? I've tried to play with the regular pick for the past couple of months(playing almost everyday) and I still can't get the feel of the strings when I play rhythm. Get a stiff pick with a pointy end. Hold the pick at a 45 degree angle to the strings. With a small down motion, the pick should pluck the strings and be ready for the next note. The key is to realize how little motion is required to make the sound you want. Start with a heavy pick and gradually go to lighter picks. A heavier pick will allow you to "FEEL" each string as it plucks or strums it. If you go to a lighter pick in this way, it will make you more sensitive to the feel your looking for. Worked for me!!! i guess it all comes down to personal preferance. but i find that smallish, think plecks are the way to go (if your playing jazz that is) they give a clean and non-percusive tone. a great brand to look into would be 'johnson' slightly expensive, but the sound and texture is beautiful! good luck on your picking journey :P many guitarists use their fingers to play electric guitar ; both rock and jazz. You dont need a pick to play guitar. theres a lot more control with just the fingers. I use a medium weight nylon pick, but also do a lot of picking with my 3rd, 4th and 5th fingers. Whatever works for you is great. I find with my technique I get a lot of variety of sound, and can do things I can't do any other way. |
