Can someone upload some sounds?
I like to play funk and jazz, and dunno what a piccolo sound like
Is it that army drum in movies? If Id use a deadringer on it would it lower the pitch a little and would it sound nice?
Thank you for your time. the guy before clearly doesn't know what a piccolo snare is. How about listening to Dennis Chambers, he's a jazz-funk drummer who uses piccolo snare. You might pick-up something from him. ok...you obviously dont know what a piccolo is...a piccolo is like a flute, but it is about three times smaller than a normal flute, and it plays about two octaves higher.maybe you are thinking about in like the civil war, because a lot of times, the side who surrendered often times sent a soldier waving a white flag, a snare drummer, and a piccolo player Click on the first link that I've listed to hear--amongst other drum sounds--4 different piccolo snare sound samples ("tuned high", "tuned medium", "tuned low", and "tuned tight"). Each is only a single hit, but they should at least give you a general idea of the sound.
As far as I know, a deadringer serves to dampen/muffle the sound as opposed to actually lowering the pitch, but you should be able to tune the drum itself to adjust the pitch up or down (as heard from those samples).
A piccolo drum is smaller and thinner than a typical snare drum and therefore produces a higher, tighter sound. It's probably the sound that you're thinking of when you say "that army drum in movies", though technically I think there are separate types of drums called "piccolo snares" and "military snares".
If you check out the second link I've listed, you'll go to a discussion board where some drummers have chatted at length about piccolo snares and their personal experiences (pros and cons) using them. One member does mention that the piccolo snare is "great for punk/new wave and military sounds a'la marching band". |
