In your opinion, what are some of the basics for Jazz improv. on a b flat CLARINET???

in your opinion what are some basics for jazz improv. if your just starting out in Jazz?

1. Good sound. Has to be habit, you'll be thinking about other things.
2. Good technique overall. Same as above.
3. Know your scales inside and out. Major, minor (all 3), pentatonic (degrees 1 2 3 5 6 of a major scale) and blues (1 b3 4 b5 5 b7 1)
4. Get Jamey Aebersold's CD/book series. Read every word and play every tune on each you get. Follow the recommended course of study.
5. At first you'll need to focus on scales but in time you'll know the sounds of the chords well enough that you'll simply know what notes fit. But focus on scales that work with chords at first.
6. Get Charlie Parker Omnibook and learn it. It will help you think in terms of the jazz melodic style. Another good book is "Patterns For Jazz" - I think it's by a guy named David Brown, could be off there.
7. Don't ever thionk you'll arrive at a point where you'll say, "Aha! I've done it!" There is always more to learn, as you will discover. That's half the fun. The other half is actually being able to do it with other musicians and make something incredible happen.

On top of knowing how to play your instrument, you really just need to be open to play whatever your gut tells you to without trying to control it

Think of some good "licks" in your head before playing.
Stay in form.
