Should i play the french horn or the trumpet?

I've been in my school band for 9 weeks and have played the trumpet. My teachers is giving the smartest students a chance to play french horn. I'm one of those kids but i dont know which i should choose?help...also, can you play jazz music on the french horn?

You know what? If you really aspire to be a jazz player - and I don't mean just high school big band, but an improvisationalist and all that - the horn all the way. ("French Horn" is a misnomer, actually. I prefer "horn", despite the ambiguity in the jazz lingo.)

Here's why. It's unique. There are few jazz horn players out there. Check out http://www.jimrattigan.com/ and http://www.tomvarnermusic.com/ for info and clips of jazz horn.

Trumpet.... French Horns are really huge!

trumpet...stay consistant

trumpet /not as hard to carry on the bus

the french horn its sexxxier!!!!!!!!!!!

i suggest trumpet~~

I personally prefer the sound of trumpet, and trumpets generally get the most exciting parts.

trumpet.

Sure, it's harder. but if you play french horn, the bell is too big, you can hardly hear yourself, and you end up blasting and sounding just horrible.

TRUMPET

Its always good to know more instruments, personally i'm quite amazing at guitar, piano, bass guitar, trumpet, and clarinet. I'm currently learning trombone and hopefully getting harp lessons. So I would say go for the french horn

The french horn is more difficult to play (thus the smartetest students) it has a larger range of notes. It has a more mellow sound. Judging from your question, you want to be able to play jazz music. There are very few french horn jazz solos. If you really like the jazz sound, you should stick with the trumpet.

Hmmm.. musically the french horn will get you in more operas, but the trumpet is the cooler of the two.. definitely more contemporary as far as music goes today... and damnit, more fun on a camping trip too!

trumpet. it's more fun

you'd be hard pressed to find jazz music written specifially for french horn. however, if you really show an interest, a good music teacher would find repertoire that she could transpose for you to play in the key of F that would be range appropriate for your instrument.

french horn is quite a bit harder to manipulate than the trumpet. the partials are much closer together, so when you think you're blowing an open note (like a g on the trumpet), theres a good chance you'll hit something other than what you're aiming for.

on the other hand, if you continue on in band beyond the kids who will inevidably drop out, there might be a dire need for french horns. you would be an asset to the ensemble. there will always be more trumpets than french horns.

ask your teacher if she or she will let you try the french horn out for size. see how you like it.

stick with it! :o)

I would say french horn. I play it and I love it. But it is kind of a big case to pull around, I have one in school and one at home. It's fun to play but hard to manage notes high and low. And combinations like key (1,2) and stuff. But I don't know much about trumpets. It seems to be just as fun. It is really up to you. You shoud ask your teacher if you could try both instruments. That should help you decide. Hope this helps! :)
O and trumpet is french horn isn't jazz.

I had the exact same problem a few years ago.

What you should do is way out the pros and cons of each instrument.

The trumpet is probably easier a bit easier at first, but becomes harder in later years. The french horn is extremely difficult at first, but once you get the hang of it, you can get really really good. Practice is key to ALL instruments.

The case for your trumpet is smaller, but don't let that affect your choice. Choose your instrument on the instrument itself, not its size.

If you have a Jazz band at your school, you could learn the French Horn, and play it in Concert Band, and play your trumpet in Jazz, which is probably your best option for now. It's a good thing that the mouthpieces are relativly the same size, so it won't affect your embouchure.

Good Luck with whatever your choice, and remember that practice and patience are key !

Well, I play trumpet and little French horn. The trumpet is the cooler instrument but as you look into the future, there are a lot more openings for French horns as there are fewer of them. Colleges are always looking for horn player or mellophone players. Also it is easier to get into band festivals on horn than on trumpet. Trumpet players are generally the most competitive musicians in the band. Jazz music is not usually written for French horn however some big band stuff is written for mellophone.

the french horn is actually very important...im guessing youre pretty young and ive been in my school bands now for 6 yrs...and yeah go with french horn!
they are very important instruments, and thwey sound sooooo nice like a smoother trumpet..or a higher pitched trombone
yes you CAN play jazz music on french horn
youll play it on a trombone part though, enless a song specfically calls for a french horn player
so many people play trumpet..be unique and pick french horn!

Depends on where you see yourself in the future. I've played trumpet for almost a year, and started french horn about a month ago (I'm a clarinetist who's looking to learn all instruments by her senior year, I've got two left and I'm only a sophomore...yikes) and I can tell you that I enjoy trumpet far more than I'll ever enjoy french horn. Horn does have a lovely sound in itself. But trumpet is so versatile. You can play any genre and make it sound decent. It's a military band instrument, a jazz instrument, classical solo, bugle corp. But in the future if you intend to go to college as a music major, so many people play trumpet that to get in, you have to be top notch, A line, scholarship material. It's absolutely crazy how many people audition for music colleges in hopes of being a trumpeteer. Go with your heart honey. Trumpet is a very emotional instrument. You've gotta have emotion and style and heart to play it, like everything else. More than french horn in my opinion. Stick with the trumpet, but practice french horn in your spare time. That way, if opportunities present themselves, you have fair knowledge of both. Good luck on your decision.

i play the trumpet its awesome.............french horn???

OMG! I used to play the trumpet until I switched over to the French Horn. The French Horn is hard to play, but you will have more fun playing it than the trumpet. IDK about your school, but mine lets us keep our French Horn at home and let us borrow one of the school's, so we just have to bring our mouthpeice to school. I know that French Horn and oboe are the 2 hardest instruments, but trust me, you won't regret playing the French Horn, it's much more fun than the trumpet and sounds really good. There usually isn't very many French Horns in the band, but alot of trumpets, so they will probably want more FH's. Good Luck!
-- To Acadamy Clockwo or whatever your name is, you wouldn't know that you can't hear yourself because I play the French Horn and I can hear myself perfectly fine.
