I need to know which kind of trombone is best? |
ive only played for about 6 years but im pretty good ive made all state jazz and every honor band and even made superior on all my solos but i need to know which brand or model of trombone is best i have a blessing b 88 but my tone sounds odd There is no "best" trombone for classical or jazz. Speak with your instructor, he will probably have ideas. I'm a professional trombonist and I use a King 2B Jiggs for jazz (it's an extra-lightweight smallbore) and a Besson Sovereign (not too different from a Conn 88H) for classical. If you're playing lead in a jazz band, the biting sound you can get from a small bore is the characteristic style due to the quicker articulation, and the silkyness lends itself to smooth lines for soloing. I might suggest trying a mouthpiece smaller than a 5G if you are going to use a small bore, but that's completely up to you. For classical, the large bore will give you the bigger more round sound, great for the big bashy Mahler/Rossini/etc and also great for classical trombone literature. Now, do I recommend my specific trombones? No, but I recommend the ideology. There are good and bad trombones, yes, but of the good it changes by the person. Your absolute best bet is to get a custom horn from Edwards or some other company, that will suit you best, but obviously you'd want to wait until you KNOW what you want. Afterall, music is not about the instrument, it's about the player. You can make any trombone sound good with practice, it's just what makes you comfortable. I'd go with whatever Billy Ray Cyrus uses! I like the shiny ones with a skinny end and and ice-cream cone shapey bit at the other. Get yourself one that is meaningful to you. Maybe inscribed, in granite or stone? Buy the best one you can afford. Do not buy one that you will be in debt forever on. You can also try ebay or music stores. You can sometimes find someone who purchased a great one, but doesn't play any more and wants cash selling on ebay. For jazz, trombonists prefer the vintage models from say the 1920s that are smaller bore and bell and more suitable to the sounds and timbre of jazz. However for concert Bach makes alot of fine trombones. Perhaps a Bach 42G would be the best of all worlds fro you. Just look on ebay and try to snag an old trombone for jazz. I see them go really cheap like $15 dollars, so keep you eyes peeled. A small bore horn is easier to hit the high notes with, but the big bore horns produce the fullest tone. I had a King 3B Concert, when I was playing. Don't think they even make it anymore, but it was an awsome sounding trombone! king 3b I'm a part-time professional trombonist in jazz and rock. I use a Bach Stradivarious 16 (about a .490 bore) with a 6 1/2 AL mouthpiece. find it's the best setup for me. Some players prefer a 7C on the Bach 16, but if you have the face to handle it, a small shank 6 1/2 AL is better. |
