Drums???!!!?

Do I really need to know what tabs are to learn drums??? I took drums last summer and my teacher mentioned nothing about tabs...I mean what are tabs anyway,,,are they similar to notes??? Am I playing the drums the wrong way....Please guys!!!help!!!
I'm always inspired when i hear the drumbeats in a song!

Well, you could first learn drums by listening to albums by drummers. There are notations for drums with each note corresponding to different drum parts.

Tabs is short for Tablature. It's a system that country guitar players developed to write music they could understand when they couldn't read real music. It's mainly for guitar. I know lots of drummers that don't read at all, so don't worry, you can still play drums. Learning to read would be a big help though.

Just like the above answer, tabs are not at all for drums! Drums, have their own music-writing system. It looks a lot similar to the real music writing system with the staff (the five lines) and the whole/half/whatnot notes. It's written in a different clef sign and is specific only for the drum instrument.

However (assuming you are a jazz drummer) you don't need to study this at all. If you learn by heart, or by imitations of another person you can achieve a very high level.

heh, tabs are for guitar, not for drums! You dont really need to know how to read music to be a drummer. I play with a proffesional jazz piano player every sunday and I dont read music! I'm 14 years old btw

no tabs are pointless... no one uses them.. drums are ear instruments.. most ppl that play drums never read music in the first place they just memorize the beats..

Despite what a few people have already said, tabs are not just for guitar; drums tabs exist too, and while its not critical that you can read them, sometimes it can be helpful and fun! Playing by ear is a great skill and what most drummers do, but being able to read music can help improve speed and timing, and sometimes it can be very helpful to look at complicated patterns on paper to help you internalize what it happening in real time. Also, if you know tabs, its a lot of fun to read music that goes along with some of your favorite songs. You can buy sheet music or check online for drum tabs for your favorite band, and you can read and play while listening to the song in the background. I love doing this, its really fun and helps me to expand my abilities.
