Am i the one that's wrong?

so last year in junior high, i joined jazz band, playing the tenor sax. this year in high school, i kept forgetting to get the music for the jazz auditions. i play clarinet, and tenor for jazz. auditions are tomorrow and now my mom is pissed that she's been paying money for the sax when "it just sits around". i tell her i don't have new music to practice and that i want to get lessons so i can keep playing it. she sees that as a waste of time since i play clarinet for concert and since i obviously won't be doing jazz. and i said that i'll get the music tomorrow and just work on it, so that when auditions come next year, i'll be great at it! she says no and wants to take it back. but i REALLY wanna get really good at saxophone, even if i WON'T be playing for band. so tell me, am i the one that's wrong?

your mother is wrong but has a point you dont have any music to practice but if you wanna get good theres other things you could do run scales long tones tounging all these things, id name more but im a bass player truust e theres always things to work on and you know what they are

If you practise it then you should be allowed to keep it but if you are not using it.....? Do you play it at all ? Just play scales or download some free music off the internet or borrow some music from a friend but if you want to keep it then play it.
Just being in a band should not be the main reason for wanting to play any instrument.

Do / play what you love.... if it's tenor sax then go for it. Just go to the HS jazz band leader and ask him/her to borrow the music, I'm sure if you show interest and passion for the sax, he/she can scrounge up some music for you.

Even if you don't make the jazz band right away, just hang around and sit in with them and PLAY. You never know, a position may open up for you in the band.

Good luck.

The world could use some more female jazz saxophonists......

You could always make copies of the music your band is playing, take it home and learn it. Chances are if you learn the music and do it well you could beat out the present sax player and take their place. Do you think that if you played better than the first chair player that the director wouldn't let you play?

Yes and no.
I suggest that you buy ''play along'' books and Cd's.
I play alto sax and it really helped me to read and also to get the right tempo.

Good Luck!

NO, for you it's about playing, for your mum it's about weather you're in a band, truth is, it's about both, but it's about playing first!! if you don't have the passion for the instrument, then there's no way you're going to get good at it, as a soloist or in a band. but you have to prove your mum wrong by playing all your instruments every day, even if it's only scales and long notes, if the instruments are being played, I'm sure your mum'll be happy and you'll only improve.

practice scales i know you don't know them all lol after that practice improvising and work on ear training
