Check out Jamey Aebersold's book Maiden Voyage. I think it's volume 54...

Some great tunes in there with backing tracks on CD including Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man and Canteloupe Island,
Impressions by John Coltrane, Summertime by Gershwin, Song for my Father by Horace Silver and more.

There are some great tunes to improvise on...

Check out pretty much any Abersold book there is. Also if you can try and get a real book. Mine helped me out alot.

miles davis's kind of blue. a masterpeice.
coltrane's love supreme or live at the birdland
chet baker's round midnight.
charlie parker, bing crosby, charlie christian....

Everyone is giving you some great places to start. I wanted to throw in Cannonball Adderley. He is a great sax player and played with Miles Davis. He was also a music teacher. If you can find some live versions of him playing, he often explains where the songs came from and why he plays it the way he does. If nothing else, you can use it to impress your teacher.
