Frantic jazz?

I really dig bebop, swing, and just plain old frantic jazz. I like gypsy swing, a lot, too, django, grappeli.... if you have read any beat novels, that is the jazz i like. what should i listen too? i dislike smooth jazz, and anything too professor-ish. help me out?

Here are some albums that I have heard personally, that I can recommend that I think fits the description of what you're searching for...

Stan Getz and JJ Johnson called Live at Town Hall. It swings hard. http://wm06.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am...

Thelonious Monk's album called Monk's Dream is another great album that I think you will like. Not as frantic, but hard core swing. http://wm06.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am...

Horace Silver plays with passion on his great album. Blue Mitchell on trumpet, anything with him on it is going to swing too. http://wm06.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am...

Lucky Thompson used to play in Bird's place, in Dizzy's band when Bird couldn't make it. Try his Lucky Strikes album. http://wm06.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am...

Red Garland Trio, Groovy. Anything with Paul Chambers on bass is going to swing. This is a good one. http://wm06.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am...

Chet Baker, The Italian Sessions. One of his more upbeat. sessions, not frantic though. http://wm06.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll

Lester Young was the best. Try the album with the other Kansas City swingers Roy Eldridge and Sweets Edison. There is no way an album with these three masters will not swing.http://wm06.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am...

Hank Mobley's album No Room For Squares is a good one. John Mayer called his first album Room For Squares, a reference to this album. http://wm06.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am...

You probably already heard of Lee Morgan. If you have not heard him, try his Sidewinder album. Bob Cranshaw plays a great bass line on the song Sidewinder. http://wm06.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am...

WKCR is the best jazz station, anywhere. Every weekday morning form 8:20-10:00am eastern time, there is a program called "Bird Flight" it's all about Bird and Dizzy. Phil Schapp is the amazing host. He know EVERYTHING about be bop, and I mean EVERYTHING. He knew Dizzy and Max Roach and talked with them many times. His show is as much about the history as it is about the music.
The rest of the programs are of various styles of jazz. They are an independent radio station and are not afraid to play rare and unusual jazz, sometimes whole album sides at a time. http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/

OK?

Assuming you've heard Gillespie, Miles, 'Trane, Bud, Rollins and Dexter, maybe you would be interested in some of the ecm sound - a little more sedate, but no less intricate. Smooth Jazz is one of those misnomers that doesn't really exist to a jazz aficionado. It was designed specifically to troll to those otherwise predisposed to easy listening Top 40 radio. See if you can find George Russell's "All About Rosie." There's a version out there with Gerry Mulligan and another with Bill Evans (on piano). They're both good, but I prefer the latter. You used the term "frantic" so you may also appreciate John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. My favorite is "Between Nothingness and Eternity" (live Central Park, '73) ,"Inner Mounting Flame," "Birds of Fire," or McLaughlin's early solo album "Extrapolation." You may also enjoy McCoy Tyner's, "Fly With The Wind," or "Mes Trois Fils." Another is John Abercrombie's "Timeless." have fun~
