I can't come up with ten. I would say that the most known would be Thelonius Monk, Ornette Coleman, and Don Cherry. My problem with avant gard musicians is that I never know if they are really serious about what they write and play or are they just putting us on. A sort of, "see how far out I am?" Ninety-nine % of what passes for avant gard just doesn't swing. It should not be classified as "jazz" because as the old jazz tune states, "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." And it "ain't" got that swing.

My favorite musicians are avant guard inspired musicians. The music they play has melody to some extent, but they take their solos way "outside" the melody (this is considered avant gard by some definitions. If you are asking about avant gard in this definition, then this is my list, and my favorite musicians of any style...

Eric Dolphy
Jaki Byard
Sam Rivers
Booker Ervin
Richard Davis
Bobby Hutcherson
Andrew Hill
Grachan Moncour III
Charles Mingus
Alan Dawson
McCoy Tyner
Tony Williams
a lot of the mid 1960's "post bop" musicians.

I appreciate the totally free avant gard musicians for their lack of respect for any "jazz" notions, and their will to just play what they want. Personally, I get disappointed in avant gard music because it IS predictable in that it gets louder and louder as the song progresses. This is why I don't listen to it so much. My list of favorites is not from much experience of avant gard listening.

Julius Hemphill
Anthony Braxton
Cecil Taylor
John Coltrane
Sonny Simmons
Peter Brotzman
Max Roach (in the 1970's)
I don't remember any other free avant gard musicians that I can have an opinion of.

Cecil Taylor
Don Cherry
Ornette Coleman
John Coltrane
Miles Davis
Monk
Eric Dolphy
Charles Mingus
Anthony Braxton
David Murray
Arthur Blythe
Max Roach
Dewey Redman
