Black musicians had a very tough time, they could play in white clubs but could not go there as guests.
A lot of musician when to Europe, France and England in particular, where there was no segregation. They where treated like human beings and their music very appreciated.
Canada was also a place they could play without any problems. The United States, absolutely. From it's creole dixieland origins in early 20th. century New Orleans, to the large urban cities (primarily New York, Chicago, Kansas City, and later LA/Frisco [west coast jazz/swing] Jazz/swing is entirely an American creation.
