I'm a jazz drummer, and a huge jazz enthusiast. I'm wondering if there are any jazz standards out there for drummers?
I'd love a list of great jazz standards/albums I can pick up. I'd like to expand my library. Well...among others, some of best would be any exisiting recordings of Chick Webb or Krupa.
In a slightly more contemporary "notch" were the recordings of Buddy rich, Louis Bellson, Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Cozy Powell. Perhaps the greatest rudimental technician ever was Joe Morello. He's featured on any number of Dave Brubek recordings.
Good luck on your hunt - I admire a young guy whose open-minded enough to look back in time as well as to the future. Here's a list of great drum standard albums and songs
1. Buddy Rich, The Roar of 74'
2. Louie Bellson, The London Gig
3. The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Take Five(Song not album)
4. Count Basie Orchestra, either Live At Newport, or On the Road, both are great albums.
5. Diana Krall, Live in Paris, Jeff Hamilton is excellent on this album.
Well there's a good list to get you started, if you research these guys you should find others. Theres a list of the top 100 jazz albums out there, you could check that out. Count Basie, "Cute"
Miles Davis/Philly Joe Jones, "Four"
Coltrane/Elvin Jones, everything you can get
There aren't really any drum "STANDARDS". Your best bet is to listen to other instruments and see how the drummer interacts and responds. Most musicians you'll end up working with arent very much interested in drums to begin with, let alone "standards". Shortnin' Bread. Dave Brubeck Quartet. Take Five Album. A fun cut. |
