Can i be a good jazz player if i do music as a hobby? |
I play flute as a hobby, can i become good at improvising without taking music as a career? I just want to enjoy jazz, i dont plan to become a herbie mann. Also, do you have any recomendations in learning to play jazz? If you enjoy the music, understand it, and have a love for it .... no reason why you can't be fairly successful in your hobby! You can be a great musician, and not play professionally. It can depend on your level of natural talent though Sure you can become a good jazz player... you just need to be dedicated enough to practice on a regular basis... 2 or 3 hours a week will work quite nicely. Work on listening, it's the most important thing. All the technique in the world will not let you improvise well if you don't know how to listen to the other players. Sure you can..but it will be a life long hobby. There are many professionals who play music on the side. I know some great guitarists who play part-time but have 9-5 jobs. My self, I gave up playing golf years ago to continue playing guitar.. I was a better guitarist than a golfer and felt If I put 3 hrs. a day that I played golf into my guitar, I'd be a much better player. Just have fun with your instrument and learn as much as you can. Develop your ears too. Good luck! |
