Jazz Bands....?

Whats so effective of using a band instead of like just a piano for Jazz music...?
Instead there are more instruments or its louder =P

Thanks You

It is louder, yes.

But also the different instruments each have a unique sound and create colors of sound.

Horns, guitars, drums, can all do things that a piano can't.

Just arranging a song for a group of intruments is an art in itself.

Besides being louder and adding more tonal color, Jazz is about collective expression, improvisation and creation. When you play with a band you're communicating with other artistic musicians rather then just yourself. I'm the happiest I can be when I'm playing, improvising, creating and communicating with other great musicians. This is why we have jazz quintets and quartets, etc. Jazz is a language. Sure it's OK to talk to yourself (we all do it!) but isn't better to talk to others... especially if it creates something artistic, something musical and something positive!

Jazz becomes static and stuck without collaboration!

Now adding in the idea of different timbres (tone colors) we'll get something quite amazing. Think of each instrument as a whole pallet of colors and the melody that is created as shapes, lines, ideas. When you have people really listening well and playing together it becomes a masterpiece. Oh and there's a reason we call it tone color, there is a color associated with each note in our scale, it corresponds to the vibration of the frequency!

Feel like jamming?

While jazz piano is definitely great, having a full band just completes the picture. It blends and melds all of the different tones and colors of each individual instrument into one big beautiful piece of art. If you find a really good jazzband, it will be one that has individual players who are self-motivated and who can really feel the music. These are the ones who have the ability to express what they are feeling to the audience and can really kick things up a notch! I always get chill bumps when I hear my jazzband play, and it's not just because I'm biassed! We are just really getting into the music and wanting everyone who is listening to understand how much we love it.

One of my fondest memories is from the time

YO MAN

You can't get crazy lead trumpet parts like Wayne Bergeron (The lead player for Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band and has don the soundtracks for countless movies, like The Incredibles), Maynard Ferguson, or Bill Chase on a piano.

That's big band jazz though, where trumpets are ever so important. Smooth jazz is a bit more touchy.
