What is the correct construction of a minor 6 chord?

is it...

root + minor third + major third + major second?
ex: A, C, E, F#

or root + minor third + major third + minor second
ex: A, C, E, F

it seems to me that the latter option would make more sense since it corresponds to the natural minor scale... if the correct one is the former, could you explain why?

In jazz/pop type music an Am6 is A C E F#

A C E F is Amb6

A C E# is Am+5

F A C E is Fmaj7 (note the difference is one of tonal center)

F# A C E is an F#halfdim7

Often, the difference is one of context.

A C E F...The major is F#....you are "lowering it" so it is F.
Univ. Of Cinn. grad sez so!!!!

The tonic (for example "C"), the minor 3rd (Eflat) the 5th (G) and the 6th (A).....anything else and you'ld have to call it a +5 or a #5

Note: A C E F is an Aminor +5 (the 5 being E# or F)

A C E F is also F Maj 7th put an A in the bass and it becomes a A minor 6th

A minor 6th chord is the minor triad and you add the 6th. It doesnt mean you flat the 6th

The correct spelling is A C E F#. The minor 6 chord uses the minor triad plus a major 2nd. It comes out of the Ascending Melodic Minor scale. That is if you are trying to form a chord from a chart that says to play Am6. Both the Maj6 and Min6 chords use the Maj6 interval from the root.

Now if you are talking about the naturally occurring minor chord that starts on the 6th degree of a major scale, you would have A C E F. The 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th notes of the natural Aminor scale and sounds pretty dissonant.
