Famous Jazz song from the 1920's. Help.? |
I am having a lot of trouble finding one. Plus I need the lyrics and why it was important to that decade. Here are some examples of the songs of the 1920s that were played and composed by Jazz musicians of that time and continue to be played today! The first I will mention is the classic blues by W.C.Handy The St.Louis Blues. Written in 1914 actually ,but not widely heard until the 1920s. You must take into account that songs were not as readily availabe for mass distribution and listening during that time the infancy of radio broadcasting!! I mention St Louis Blues first because people are familiar with it to this day in 2007. Check into the many other great songs by the great composer W.C.Handy. Old Man River composed in 1927 is another oldie very well known and played and listened to these days.Stardust by Hoagy Carmichael 1927 very well known ,recorded by hundreds another great song played today by Jazz and other musicians.Summertime although composed by George Gershwin in 1933 is another very old song from the 20s and 30s.Duke Ellington composed his classic song The Creole Love Call in 1928.Mood Indigo written in 1930 by Duke Ellington was one of the many great songs Ellington composed that have stood the test of time .1928 Cole Porter wrote the song Let's Do It another song from long ago still listened to and played today!I am sure you may have heard the song Sweet Georgia Brown at somtime??Well that was composed in 1925 by Ben Bernie. Oh Lady Be Good by George Gershwin composed in 1924!! Still played and listened to today.1927 Gershwin wrote S'Wonderful and Gershwin wrote the classic I Got Rhythm the tune that thousands of Jazz musicians have used the chord progressions for the basis of countless tunes!! Well thats a few of the songs from the 1920s that have significant meaning at the time they were composed and today!! Check out sheet music stores for songbooks of the 1920s and 1930s. Checkout record stores or online music services for CDs by Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong in their early years . The easiest way to do this is go to a music store with a good jazz cd selection and ask for assistance if you are not familiar with the jazz repertoire. Much classic jazz and popular music from the 20's has been remastered and reissued on cd and is inexpensive to purchase. Hearing this music will give you a better sense of what it was all about than just copying lists of titles and lyrics. The sleeve notes included with some recordings may give you an indication of the importance of the music and artistes in that time period. Good luck. Look up some of the King Oliver stuff... he did a lot of well known songs in the 1920's The Original Dixieland One Step predated the 1920's but it is very important because it was the first recorded example of jazz ever put to commercial recording and released for sale thus enabling jazz to be heard coast to coast. On the same session the Original Dixieland Jazz Band recorded Livery Stable Blues. |
