What trumpet mouthpiece should I use for jazz band and what trumpet mouthpiece should i use for marching band

I have a bach 3c right now

There are a few things to consider when choosing a new mouthpiece. First you need to understand the difference between rim diameter and cup depth. On Bach pieces the number (3) is the rim diameter (the distance from one side of the mouthpiece to the other) and the letter (C) is the cup depth. With Bach mouthpieces a smaller number means a larger rim diameter and the cup depths go from deep to shallow, starting with A. So, a 3C is smaller and more shallow than a 1B, and a 3C is larger and deeper than a 5D.

Why do you need to know this? Because you need to find a comfortable rim diameter first, and then choose a cup depth based on the playing situation you will be in.

If you feel that your embrochure is large enough to be comfortable in the # 3 rim then stick with that. A lot of classical players go for a # 1 rim, but if you are going to be an all around player I wouldn't go any larger than a # 3. # 5 is fine too, and even # 7, although it is mostly for beginners and people with very small lips. Basically, find out what is most comfortable for your body.

Next, choose a cup depth. C is a standard all around. I would go for a D for marching and big band jazz, C for concert band, small band jazz, B for symphonic band. If you are in a lead chair and need to scream, maybe go for an E, but if you start relying on a shallow mouthpiece for range then you will ruin your tone in the middle register.

All mouthpiece brands follow some sort of similar system, it just takes a little research to figure it out. Usually they will offer a comparison chart that uses Bach as the standard. Good luck!

you can use the same mouthpiece for either. I used a Bach 2B which is what the band instructor preferred. It isn't the mouthpiece but the way you play the trumpet.

There is a great DVD by trumpet great Warren Vache called I Love The Trumpet. Four hours of great trumpet info. I advise everyone playing trumpet to get that DVD. It should be available at the website Artistshousemusic.com or at your local music store. Yes it is how you play the trumpet and not so much the mouthpiece. I play trumpet flugelhorn and cornet and use a Bach 5A on all horns. I know that is very deep but for me it works on all the ranges. 3C Bach does it work for you then use it. Remember get the DVD I mentioned earlier you will be very glad you did!

I personally only play in jazz and I use a Bobby Shew Jazz Mouthpiece. People say it will 'ruin my embochure' but it is the only mouthpiece I use and its the only style I use. Helps me scream those high notes (nice since I'm 1st chair) but hard to play low on, so yeah, stick with your 3c if that works for you
