The Unplugged, Eclectic 1970s and 1980s jazz...?

What is you opinion regarding the 'avant-garde and experimental jazz'?

I believe that by the 1970s, much of the avant-garde was already well-represented by artists from the 60s such as Eric Dolphy, Anthony Braxton, Ornette Coleman, Carla Bley, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and a host of others. The ECM label prided itself on much of the so-called avant-garde of the 70s, but I do not agree that it was as innovative as the avant-garde of the 60s.

The 70s were more about Fusion than the true avant-garde form. John McLaughlin, Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius and Miles were doing some pretty other-worldly stuff. The 80s were about fusing more hip-hop and pop genres. In retrospect, that stuff is no longer considered avant-garde.

The shelf life of any labled avant-garde is maybe a couple of years before it becomes part of the mainstream. It is really difficult to define avant-garde and to place music in that genre for any extended amount of time.

*blech*

Although, I would say it did eventually yeild world music which has some value.

avant-garde did not have its origins in the 1970s by any means. nor did it only last through the 80s, for it is still alive today. lastly, what do you mean by "The Unplugged, Eclectic?" avant-garde jazz music can, indeed, be very much plugged-in, as Miles Davis's 70s combos were...

i didn't think it was that great
