What is Ray Charles' song "The mess around" talking about doing? a dance? or having sex?
What is his other song Georige talking about? a girl? or the state? "Georgia On My Mind" is usually seen as being about the US state of Georgia (it's the official state song), but was written with a specific woman in mind.
""Georgia On My Mind" is a song written in 1930 by Stuart Gorrell (lyrics) and Hoagy Carmichael (music). It is the official state song of the U.S. state of Georgia. Gorrell wrote the lyrics for Hoagy's sister, Georgia Carmichael. However, the lyrics of the song are written ambiguously enough as to refer to the state or to a woman named "Georgia." Carmichael's 1965 autobiography, Sometimes I Wonder, records the origin: a friend suggested: "Why don't you write a song called 'Georgia?' Nobody lost much writing about the South."

So you can read it as being about a state or a woman.
As for "Mess Around", ditto - see in it what you like. Both meanings you stated are correct, actually. Back in those days people were a little more coy. The Little Richard song "The Girl Can't Help It" is about more than it seems : ) Back then they didn't just come out and SAY sex ... the lyrics were 'double entendres'.
That's what made them clever, they could be either! Georgia, is about the state that he is from, if i am not mistaking, he dreams about home.
Mess around, is a dance, if you seen his movie, he is sing that song at some bar place. When i was a little girl, i use to see my family member dancing to this song. this is one of his old songs, before he really came famous Ray Charles, then he was Ray. |
