I want to buy a new mouthpiece...
Can you recommand a good muthpiece for me? Mouthpieces are a very personal thing, and they need to be chosen by playing them. Its difficult for other people to recommend something. It would also be helpful if we knew what kind of sound you are trying to get to..
All that being said.. for a beginner, looking to move onto a more advanced mouthpiece, there are two basic good choices..
1. For a classical/concert band type sound, the Selmer C* is a great choice.
2. For a more modern/pop or Jazz sound, I recommend a Meyer 5 or 6.
Neither of these pieces will break the bank, and will get any person on the right track. My son loves his Selmer Star 80 or C star 80 maybe. It's a good first step up, available on ebay if you want used, and does make a noticeable difference in the sound of your horn. There are as many different styles of moutpieces for saxophones as there are brands of golf clubs. I think I paid like 30-40 bucks for my used Selmer for tenor sax. New it maight be around $100. You can spend $3-400 on some rare mothpieces if you are so inclined, but you'd better have the chops to blow them!!

DM&FS The answer of Selmer C* and Meyer 5/6 mouthpieces is good, but I have some personal preferences.
You may want to check out the Eugene Rousseau classical mouthpieces (for Classical, obviously) and the Jody Jazz mouthpieces (for Jazz, obviously). I own both of these and I cannot imagine playing on anything else.
There are so many good ones out there and so many to try to find the one that best suits each player. While you're at it, check out new reeds to fit the style of the mouthpiece. A reed can make a world of difference in playing. |
