Is Billie Holiday more Jazz or Blues?

Or mixture of both?

I would say that more people categorize Billie as a certified jazz singer. I, personally think she is both.

It's mostly jazz what she does, but it has many elements of blues in there. It's great! The way she sings, it's mostly soft swifty jazz pop. In some songs though, it has alot of blues textures to them.

:) Happy holidays.

Mixture, but I would have to say more Jazz. I LOVE Billie Holiday!!

More Jazz:)

I agree jazzy more then bluesy, if you like her listen to some Ella Fitzgerald and most certainly Etta James.

Jazz. She invented a whole style of jazz phrasing.
I bet she could sing real blues to break your heart though if you got her alone with a bottle or two.

The Lady's more on jazz the bluesy way.

more jazz i would say :)

Billie did very few blues. Her repertoire was almost entirely the swing style of jazz.

To me she is equally both. Shes easily the greatest jazz singer of all time as well as the greatest blues singer of all time. Shes one of my two favorite singers of all time, the other being Minnie Riperton.

About 60%-70 % of her recordings are Jazz. The remainder are Pop in instumentation, arrangement, etc. Although there is a very blue quality to her voice and lyrics, she isn't a blues singer.
