Whose the best bass/jazz player ever?

AnY you tube videos(for music)

The Best has not been determined yet, but here are a few contenders:

- Jaco Pastorius
- Stanley Clarke
- Charles Mingus
- Ray Brown
- Ron Carter
- Marcus Miller
- Charlie Hayden
- Alphonzo Johnson

Many More, Many More......
The answer to your question would really depend on the style of jazz you're talking about.

Jaco

aki

NO DOUBT IN MY MIND, VICTOR WOOTEN!

Just look up his name on youtube.

Charles Mingus.

Marcus Miller
Wayman Tisdale

Richard Davis.

Especially on the Booker Ervin ablums with Jaki Byard and Allen Dawson. Richard Davis was great on a lot of mid 1960's post bop albums, the albums with one foot in melody, and one fooet in the avant guard. Davis was very creative in addition to having skills. He is by far, my favorite bass player.

Bill Laswell
Steve Swallow

I'll just ignore other answers and risk repeating what they've said. Jaco Pastorious did some great work with weather report, but he's dead. Victor Wooten does great stuff with Bela Fleck.

Bass Guitar:Jaco. Stand up (double) Bass, the late Ray Brown.

Mingus
Wilbur Ware
Ray Brown
Oscar Pettiford
Ron Carter

Always thought Jimmy Garrison was underrated.

Ray Brown or Leroy Vinegar. I believe Vinegar has played on more jazz albums than anyone else in history.

Vic Wooten

Acoustic or electric? My choice for electric is Jaco Pastorious. My second choice is Stanley Clarke.
Acoustic is hard. Maybe Charlie Mingus.

In my humble opinion,

Ray Brown - nobody can touch him !!
Ron Carter - Very honorable mention
Charlie Mingus - A little over the top for me -but highly innovative
James Jamerson - My sentimental favorite.
Electric - Stanley Clarke - Jaco coudn't carry his case.

Noel Redding??????????? who said that ? With ALL due respect, Redding barley knew the difference between a Bb and a screwdriver - I met in briefly in the late 60's - an untalented jerk, and I'm being kind.

However, and in fairness......too each their own !!

There are severval factor in determining this, a lot of bass players mention fall into different caterogies like innovators, techincal monsters, pocketeers. There really is no best. It all about who you like. Remember music is subjective.

In my opinion, it's Tom Kennedy from the Dave Weckl band. He's unbelievable! Check out this vid of one of his solos on youtube:

Ray Brown, no doubt. My other favorites are Ron Carter, Keter Betts & Tommy Williams. Electric b. g. favorites are Stanley Clarke & Gene Byrd.

In order:
Ray Brown
Charlie Hayden and Eddie Gomez (Both played with Bill Evans)
Paul Chambers ((with Miles Davis)
Ron Carter

Definitely Jaco, but there are others that are fun to listen to, like Mingus and Victor Wooten...anyone ever heard of Rufus Reid? He's pretty awesome too...

Stan Getz

do you mean best jazz bass player or best bass player that played jazz....if you mean the first one than Noel Redding...of The Jimi Hendrix Experience
