How can i become organized and bad-azz when i improvize? |
How can i become organized and bad-azz when i improvize? Like, in my church, the dudes were playing, and then the pastor was really likin the music and left his "big preacher man" chair and went up on stage and brung the house down with the saxamophone. Then , the piano player KILLED THIS PIANO AD-LIB, it was sick man, it was so awesome. How do i get like that, i mean, i know it takes practice, but they were playing like they were Dizzy or Miles Davis or something\ Hm, I completely disagree about not thinking. You definitely should think about what you play. The most exciting and enjoyable solos are ones that have structure. Improvisation isn't making something from nothing, it's making something new using the knowledge you have and thinking about it in real time. Have a look at http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=TebUMhJAKS... from 3mins 20secs. You play from the soul. Don't think while you play. That's the key to improv. When you think you start playing like others. You want to play original stuff when you improvise. That's the whole point. Learning jazz and blues will help you improvise in any style. Get a teacher who can teach you jazz or the blues and it will help you improvise better in a church setting. Also there is a really good book on playing gospel on the piano titled "Gospel Keyboard Styles" by Mark Harrison, which you can find on www.amazon.com The click you heard was a definite groove that happens when it all comes together, so to speak. You're already well on the way to understanding that. I suggest you spend time hearing the greats - Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk. Then move up to more contemporary guys like Herbie Hancock. Listen to James Brown. Listen to the improvisation, the mood changes, the dynamics when they intro, peak and wind down. Work on your arpeggios and accent them with some new chords. Get some play along cds and jam with the band. Band in a Box is a nice software program that you can use to accompany yourself too. If you want to hear some good teaching music, go to the Hear and Play Zone. Lots of the stuff is free and there are chat groups and forums to discuss exactly what you're talking about. Best wishes and keep listening & playing! |
