My great uncle is vido musso. He was a tenor sax player and played with many well known jazz artist in his day

i would like to find out more about him and his past career if anybody knows anything about him. It would make my grandfather and myself happy for any information. thanks

Lucky you.

Howard Rumsey said these nice things about your uncle. If you Google "Vido Musso" I am sure you'll find a lot of things about him.

"Vido was a master of solfeggio, an ear training practice where you hear anything and can play it note for note" Rumsey said. "He could fake his way through pretty good. In fact, a musician isn't a musician until he's got that down. That's where you hear with your eyes and see with your ears. That defines a real musician."

I'm sorry, I don't read much about jazz Players, but I would like to say, My father introduced me to Vido's playing, we are both jazz musicians in Australia, and Vido Musso has been one of my favorite soloists and I've always tried to solo as fluidly as him.

Vido (William) Musso, b. Carrini, Sicily 01/13/13; d. Rancho Mirage Ca001/09/82; Tenor saxophonist. In 1920 his family emigrated to the US and settled in Detroit, where he took up clarinet. He moved to Los Angeles in 1930 and played with Stan Kenton in several local orchestras. The two men founded a big band in 1936 but Musso left later that year to work with Benny Goodman (1936-7) and with Gene Krupa (1938). He made repeated attempts between 1938 and 1947 to establish himself as a bandleader, but also played again with Goodman 1939, 41-2 and with Harry James 1940-41, Woody Herman 1942-3 and Tommy Dorsey 1945. He spent two further periods with Kenton 1945-7 where his exhuberant and uncomplicated improvisations and and gruff, aggressive style made him extremely popular. After leaving Kenton, he played in southern California and from 1957 worked in Las Vegas.

RECORDINGS: Moose on the Loose, 1946 Savoy
and several tracks with Kenton 1945-46.
