I like jazz but i want to hear more artists....?

miles davis and john coltrane are the most well known are there for all i know... what other artists are there? that are similar? and not too cheesey please...

i just realized the only people go into this genre to ask questions... :/

Miles and Coltrane are two of the greats. Other outstanding musicians from around that era include Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk.

A couple of great resources for exploring music are internet radio and allmusic.com. If you don't have an internet radio player, download Winamp and check out Shoutcast Radio - thousands of stations, grouped by genre, including some good jazz ones. Allmusic.com gives you information about artists and their recordings, and lets you hear brief samples. It also lists similar artists, and has pages on various genres, so you can explore the different forms of jazz (or techno, or whatever).

Duke Ellington
Diana Krall
Amy Winehouse
Pat Metheny
Nat king Cole
Sarah Vaughan
Peggy Lee
Dean Martin
Dinah Washington

It's all a matter of taste. You might try checking out some internet radio stations that specialize in jazz. I know there's a site called "Pandora" (www.pandora.com) out there that allows you to type in songs/artists that you like, and then it plays similar music. You can rate that music and get more songs that match what you enjoy.

Etta James
Ella Fitzgerald
Dave Coz
Louis Armstrong
Dave Brubeck
George Benson

Oscar Peterson, Ornette Coleman, Shostakovich :D

Too cheesey? I have not heard that since high school. Jazz is new to me and I have only heard artists like Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, and the ones you mention, they all seem similar to me as my ears are new to Jazz. Im a Metalhead trying to expand my tastes, I have found true classical music to be the most enjoyable so far. Whats your favorite instrument in Jazz?

My friend loaned me his Diana Krall CD and her performance blew me away.

Jamie Cullum is a great jazz artist that puts a really nice modern swing on some jazz. Particularly his album Catching Tales!

You might want to check out http://www.jazz.fm . This is JAZZ 91.1 FM in Toronto. Or try http://www.couleurjazz.com , which is 91.9 FM in Montreal.

Donald Byrd.

Roy Ayers.
Grover Washington Jr.
Ronny Jordan.
Herbie Hancock.
Stanley Clark.
Bob James.

If you are a trumpet fan check out these trumpet players:
Warren Vache
Harry"Sweets"Edison
Dizzy Gillespie
Chet Baker
Bobby Hackett
Wynton Marsalis
Freddie Hubbard
Harry James
Roy Eldridge
Jon Faddis
Ruby Braff
Buck Clayton
Maynard Ferguson
Clifford Brown
Art Farmer
Herb Alpert These are some of my favorite trumpet players. They represent a wide diversity of styles and individual approach to Jazz. Listening to them you will be able to develop a knowledge of who else to listen to on different instruments by reading the notes on the players on the CD . For instance you will notice say on piano Oscar Peterson plays with Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Eldridge among others. You will see Oscar Peterson has many CDs with his trio and you can develop an interest in his piano playing. So on like that, you will hear sax player Stan Getz playing with Dizzy Gillespie and look for some Stan Getz CDS. This is how I basically developed my knowledge of Jazz players. Also listen to FM radio college stations there is usually a college FM station that plays Jazz. Good Luck and Good Listening.
