Benny Golson (i think that's how you spell it) The "Big Band Jazz" or "Swing" grew out of the jazz and dance bands in America.at the start of the 20th century and was a progression from the smaller jazz groups which generally used only one of each instrument. The Bigger bands tended to use more arranged music and the use of larger sections within the band - Three trumpets, trombones and saxophones, etc. Fletcher Henderson is a prime example.
Paul Whiteman was one of the best known white "Big Band" leaders in the 1920s (Bing Crosby was one of a vocal trio with Whiteman's orchestra - The Rhythm Boys)) Many famous jazz musicians started, or rose to fame with Whiteman - such as "Bix" Beiderbecke, Frankie Trumbauer, Jack Teagarden and even Benny Goodman.himself.
Many band musicians played together in small groups before forming their own bands and as time went on their music was heard on radio, in dance halls and in theatres. The ffilm "Cotton Club" is a good indicator of the kind of music that became popular at that time. Look out also for the films "The Benny Goodman Story" "The Gene Krupa Story" and "The Glenn Miller Story". The Cotton Club was where Duke Ellington' s band was featured and later the band of Cab Calloway both Black musicians.
"Big Band Jazz" became popular by the mid 1930s with many of the musicians from the earlier groups forming their own bands.
