Is there any difference between the box sets Lady Day: The Complete Columbia Golden Years and Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday On Columbia (1933-1944)? Yes, they are different; but not by much. Other than the obvious stuff like cover art, they have a different order to the track list, and a handful of songs (three or four) that are different--mostly alternate takes and recordings of songs that already appear once elsewhere in the set. Not really enough difference to make one more worth it than the other, I would say, unless you're really in to reading liner notes.
Edit:
Umm... I don't know how the previous poster's math works, but I want him computing my paychecks. There's not a thousand tracks. There's only ten discs in the set; that would require 100 tracks per disc to get to a thousand. There is in fact 230 tracks in total on that set, compared to 233 on the other one.
One thing that is significantly different that I just noticed is the price on Amazon; that could certainly be a deciding factor. |
