Depends on who you ask. (Generally,) A religious person will tell you that God (or some other creator-figure) made the chicken first, whereas an evolutionist will tell you that the egg that held the evolved-into-a-chicken creature came first.

Very, very technically it has to be the egg.
If you believe evolution it would have to have gone like this:
there's an animal which is the "ancestor", the beginning of the chicken. This animal lays an egg and out of it comes an animal just like the mother. This goes on and on but very graduatly there comes a change because the animal adapts to its habitat* until the first chicken evolved. So at some place the chicken like animal layed an EGG and out of that came a very slightly different animal: the CHICKEN!!!!
