Jet magazine was first published in 1951. I found no record or previous name. It's owned by Johnson Publishing company now and is a part of Ebony magazine.

Jet magazine was always called Jet. It was created by John H Johnson and was always owned by Johnson Publishing Company.

There was a similar predecessor to Jet called Negro Digest. Mr. Johnson created Negro Digest (pre 1951) by putting together newspaper articles written about blacks - similar concept to Reader's Digest. It was the magazine he started the company with.

Jet is different from Negro Digest in that it was always original content written just for Jet - whereas Negro Digest was articles published from around the country then put together in one package.
