Who remembers Dee Dee Sharp's 45rpm copy of Please Mr. Postman on the Cameo label? |
Somewhere in 1961 or 1962, I was 10 or 11, in Thistletown, a lady, Leady Henderson, allowed me to borrow her copy of Dee Dee Sharp's "Please Mr. Postman". I have a flawlessly vivid recollection of having seen that song title and artist on a Cameo label and on the 45rpm that I played over & over & over & over again & again & again & again. The biggest reason for my decision to buy "Mashed Potatoe Time", in 1962, from Woolworth's Dep't Store was because it was the second time I saw her name and the Cameo label together on a record I paid $1.01 for it (i.e., "Mashed...") for. Also, the first time I heard the Marvelette's version was in 1975, on an oldies station. Before that I knew them for "Playboy" only. I know several others who agree that Dee Dee Sharp did Please Mr. Postman. Besides, her version sounds a lot more like "Mashed.." and her other stuff than any of the other songs that the Marvelettes' did. So, naturally, I doubt the claim that the Marvelette's were the first to sing it. Wait a minute Wait a minute Mr. Postman, Please please please please Mr. Postman! I like that too. Brings back memories. I was born in 1962 but I think I distinctly remember hearing the song before 1975. First The Marvelettes (The Marvels) in 1961 |
