Selling to your articles and short stories?

I'm interested in getting some of my articles and short stories in publications. How do i make sure I get credit for them, no one steals them and what's the best way to submit your work to different publications?

With articles, you have to write a query letter to the publications/magazines you'd like to write an article for. In the query letter, you explain your story idea-- why/how the idea is a good/important one, why you'd be perfect to write it, and also show that you know their style of writing. (since each publication usually has a specific tone) if they get back to you, then that's when you send them your article. to find out who to send query letters to, check the publication's/magazine's website. i'm not sure how to go about short stories though.
