so basically what happened to his family?? i was so confused did they die?? Was everyone in the whole universe dead or just NYC ?

His family died ewhen they were leaving New York Cituy on the day that it was supposed to be quarintined. The bridge that goes across the harbor was like blown up and another helicopter veered and hit theirs, the helicopters caught on fire and they were killed. Most people were killed in the whole world, but the ones who survived met at the survivors colony. The ones who weren't killed were mutants. There were probably other people who were scattered around like Neville was as well.

Yes his family died i know that i didn't go into much detail but if you look at the back rooter before the scene ends it goes right where his family was sitting. And it did spread because Anna the women that saved him was from sao paulo in Brazil and she was put on a Red Cross evacuation Ship that became infected

His family died in the helicopter crash. Not everyone on the Earth died-there were survivors scattered around-the only ones we see are Will Smith's character, the lady and the kid that help him, and then at the end, the people at the survivor's colony that the woman and the kid go to where you see guards and presumably a scientist.
