The movie opened w/ a scientist (played by Emma thompson (Professor Trelawney in Harry Potter)) who claims that her company has found a way to destroy cancer. Unfortunately, her cure has turned the majority of the users to die or to turn into the vampire zombies. Will Smith's character is a military scientist. He is immuned to the disease (both airborne and biting) so he sends his family (wife and daughter) on a copter out of the city w/ a few other people. While in the car going there, his daughter trys to make him see this butterfly she made with her hands (Follow the butterfly). Unfortunately, on the copter, people get crazy trying to grab onto another helicopter and accidentally crash that one into his family's copter. No one survives.The bridge is then blown out so the infected can't leave (although people from everywhere else are infected too.) So, three years later (2012), it's just Robert Neville (Smith) and his dog, that his daughter asked him to keep before the plane crashed, Samantha (Sam.) They live a life that consists of them going around the city hunting the wildlife (deer) that has developed. When it starts to get dark, they go home where he continues his work on the cure for the infection. When it gets fully dark, he locks up his house and sleeps quietly as to avoid the detection of the evil Vampire Zombies that roam the city at night. The next day, he goes to the video store. It is here that we see how lonely he really is. He has set up manaquins all across the city and pretends they're real people (including this 'girl' he has a crush on at the video store (who is positioned in front of the pornos :)) Afterwards, he goes hunting again. When he gets close to catching one, it runs into a dark building where the Vampire Zombies hide during the day. Sadly, his dog chases after him. Smith goes into search for her (very suspenseful). Soon, he accidentally sees a circle of the Vampire Zombies. Luckily, they don't notice him! He moves away to another room where he finds Sam. But then, a Vampire Zombie jumps out and starts to chase them. The Vampire Zombie jumps on Neville and starts to attack him but he barely makes it out a window where the Vampire Zombie is burned to death. Neville is immuned to the bites as well as the airborne disease but Sam is not (from the biting). She wasn't bitten but Neville warns her about it. It is then that Neville gets a great idea. He takes out some of his blood and sets up a trap w/ his blood as the bait outside the building. A Vampire Zombie comes out and she is captured. It is then that the leader of the Vampire Zombies comes out and screeches angrily at Neville but then retreats. Neville takes the Vampire Zombie home and tries his new cure out on the Vampire Zombie but it doesn't work. He decides to see what would happen if he lowers the temperature (their average is 200 farenheit!) so he puts her on ice and continues on w/ his life. The next day is his 1001 day alone (his birthday, he's so lonely, he tells his dog not to throw him a surprise party. LOL!). He puts out another transmission of his prescence (the one on the trailer) on the AM broadcasts to see if anyone will come. Everyday, he waits at the harbor at a desk for anyone to come. No one does. While driving around, Neville notices that one of his manequins (Fred) is misplaced. He begins to shout at him and ask if he's real. When he doesn't get an answer, he kills Fred and walks over to him to check if he was really alive. Suddenly, a trap goes off leaving Neville hanging upside down, unconscious. It's obvious that it was set up by the Vampire Zombies. He finally wakes up when it's starting to get dark. He cuts himself down and falls on something sharp that hurts his leg. He trys to crawl away but when it's completely dusk, the Vampire Zombies unleash their Vampire Dogs (who are the only vampires that can go out at dusk, the others have to wait till night.). The dogs try to attack Neville but Sam heroically saves him and is bitten and injured in the process. Neville takes her home and trys out his cure that worked on rats earlier. Sadly, it doesn't work on Sam and he does a mercy killing on her when she exhibits Vampirisms. The next day, he returns to the video store and talks to the girl he likes. He's so upset that he starts crying "Please say something to me." She doesn't. That night you can see the shadowy Neville asleep at the desk of the harbor. The Vampire Zombies run towards him and start attacking him. It's then that they realize it's not him. The real Neville starts attacking them in his car. But with the leadership of the head Vampire Zombies, they are able to group attack the car and stop him. They are about to kill him when another car comes up and blinds them to make them run away. Neville passes out after he tells the mysterious woman driver where he lives. He wakes up in his house several hours later (to Shrek! :) to find that a woman is making breakfast for him, herself and her son. Her name is Anna and her son is Ethan. She hands him the plate of bacon and eggs and starts to tell him of where they came from (a Red Cross evacuation ship.) When she starts to tell him of a colony of survivors she thinks are in Vermont, Neville snaps and yells that it's not true because everyone is dead. He goes to be alone for a while but then comes down to apologize (but first he recites some lines from Sherk, LOL again! :) to them. Later that night, after Ethan is put to sleep, Neville asks exactly how she knows there are people in Vermont. She claims God told her. He starts to tell her it's not true again as everyone is either dead or had turned into the dark seekers (Vampire Zombies) but is interrupted by the gathering Vampire Zombies outside. It turns out that Anna accidentally led the Vampire Zombies to his house so they knew where he lived. Anna runs upstairs to check on Ethan while Neville trys to stop the Vampire Zombies. After his attempt proves unsuccessful, he runs upstairs and finds a Vampire Zombie is in the house. He shoots at it (but this proves unsuccessful.) The Vampire Zombie runs away and Neville goes to check on Anna and Ethan. He finds they're hiding under a bed while the Vampire Zombie is digging away at the ceiling. The Vampire Zombie hears Ethan and starts to jump down when Neville makes a brave move for a gun and kills it. Neville takes Anna and Ethan down to his lab where they find that the Vampire Zombie girl has been cured (because of the ice controling her temperature AND the cure.) Unfortunately, the Vampire Zombies burst through the door. Neville puts up bullet proof glass shields to block off the zombie and trys to tell them he can cure them. Unfortunately, they're not smart enough to comprehend and instead resort to trying to break down the shield. With very little hope of surviving, Neville notices Anna's tattoo: A butterfly on her neck. It's then that he remembers his daughter's follow the butterfly words. He then decides to believe in Anna's words of the colony in Vermont. So, he takes some of the girl Vampire Zombie's cured blood and gives it to Anna and Ethan. He then hides them in a little crawl space shelter and tells them not to come out until dawn. Then, he takes a look at his picture of his family, pulls out a grenade and pulls the pin. The Vampire Zombies finally bust through the shield and Neville sacrifices himself by running into the Vampire Zombies with the grenade and causes a huge explosion. Afterwards, Anna and Ethan are seen driving to the colony (which actually exists) in Vermont and delivers them the cure. Anna's voiceover talks about how Neville gave his life to cure countless others and save the human race. "This was his story. His legend" (or something along those lines.)
The end. I hope you enjoyed that! I know I did! If I were you I'd see the movie but it all depends on whether or not you liked what I said! :) The ending was that Will Smith's character throws a grenade/bomb to kill all of the bad guys and I guess kills himself. Here's three:
1) Some lady discovered a cure for cancer, but the cure ended up being an infection and killing billions of people.
2) Will Smith's character's family is killed in a helicopter accident in mid-air while trying to escape New York (the epic center of the disease) and go to an island.
3) At night time is when the zombies come out. They're very strong, fast, and real smart he was holding his dog, and choked her after she got infected. =(
yes will smiths character does throw a grenade, killing the "dark seekers" & probably himself at the end.
but im still confused.
my father heard that a triology was being made out of this.
