For me, Christmas is about old traditional stuff. So while "Scrooged" is good, it's not old enough to be traditional for me. Neither is "Home Alone" with all its pratfalls and hilarity.

So we return to the days of yore, when Roy Rogers rode across the huge 12-inch black-and-white screen in glorious mono sound. Beaver Cleaver was a little kid whose biggest problem was sneaking one of Mrs. Cleaver's warm-from-the-oven cookies. (I was too young to notice that Barbara Billingsley always wore heels and pearls to make cookies.)

Yep, we're back beyond then, to a time before I was born, when Laurel and Hardy starred in "March of the Wooden Soldiers." Even now, it's not Christmas for me until I dig out my own copy and play it. If some local channel should run it because it's cheaper than CSI reruns, that's fine with me too. Watching Old Mother Hubbard and Bo Peep struggle against Mr. Barnaby, helped by the inane duo makes it Christmas. The world in this movie is so artificial and saccharine, it can only belong to children.

I was a child then. If I forget for a bit now, I'm a child again.
