Why didn't Elton John sing in the original Band Aid song?

Please I need a swerious answer, I can't explain to my Mum what cottaging is!

Throughout 1984 Elton was on his Breaking Hearts tour and was in America round about the time the single was recorded. The whole Band Aid idea was conceived, the song written and then recorded in a very short space of time and the chances are that Bob Geldof couldn't get hold of Elton or that Elton couldn't fit the recording into his schedule.

Maybe he was on tour or in concert.

Was he playing tennis with one of his chums?

why do you think he should have done

maybe he didn't like cocaine (apparently at the first band aid recording, there were more dealers present than were in the local nick)
