What's the difference between the two instruments? I seen them both and I can't tell the difference. Dobro is a trade name for Gibson that they use for a type of resonator guitar however it has become common usage most types of resonators sort of like Kleenex for tissue papers or Xerox for copiers. However the 'dobro' as originally designed has a single inverted resonator cone whereas most resonator guitars had three (commonly called tricone) cones. Strings typically rested on the apex of the cones but with the 'dobro' they rested on a device attached to the perimeter of the inverted cone. The Dobro was the go-to brand for resonator guitars. Sort of like the Q-tip of cotton swabs. |
