My 18th birthday is coming up and I'm having a party.
I have music ranging from slow songs to upbeat songs, different genres. Electronica, dance, pop, hip-hop, rap, and rock. Should I play upbeat songs first and slower songs last? Should I play the songs according to genre? Or should I mix them up so everyone can hear a little something they like?
And if you have any suggestions of songs that are great for parties / dancing, please mention them, too. The answer with good advice and maybe some song suggestions will be voted best answer :) The momentum should build . Unless its a formal affair, avoid slow songs..slow songs are party KILLERS unless its a wedding party and Dads first dance with the new bride.
Start the flow with medium pace songs and keep it consistenty flowing with good rhythm stuff while guests arrive.About halfway though the party you want to start playing the major jams and get the crowd moving.
As far as what kind of music to play, that's entirely up to you. You can do 8-10 minute sets of dance, country, even big band. Remember, you have all kinds of guests with all kinds of tastes so incuding a little of everything is a considerate thing to do .
I used to have a portable dj service and during my gigs I constantly read the crowd to determine what I would p[lay next. Just loading music into a player or ipod shuffle doesn't allow you to make smooth gradual transitions. My suggestion is to hire a very knowledgeable d.j. who has experience in all genres of music ...a good one will read the crowd and keep tham happy and dancing. |
