Is it legal to force us to subscribe to the B.B.C in this present day when there are so many other options.?

Pls no nonsense about we are paying for the right to recieve signals to our homes.
This is only what the B.B.C says to apease the dull.

I am fed up with the BBC sponging off the public....all the other channels pay for themselves and have no problems...so should the Bad Broadcasting Company....

Look, the BBC is a national institution, like the police or defence force or NHS. You may be with BUPA, but you still need to pay NI and taxes. The licence fee is a tax, but it supports a worthwhile national institution. At least it is a tax that we know is going into something identifiable. In other countries, they just divert some of the general tax into the national broadcaster. Without it, you have to endure endless commercials and a lower standard of programming. Look at the USA. You need to pay me just to watch their stuff.

I dont know if its legal or otherwise - but am personally fed up of it! Have just received a letter reminding me to pay the licence and stating I can no longer pay at the PO! So not only a pain having to fork out for it but inconvenient having to find a way to do it!

It's legal because the Communications Act 2003 (replacing various Broadcasting Acts) says it is. Whether it's still relevant is another matter.

I presume from your question that you buy all your TV from Sky or Virgin. Most terrestrial analogue and Freeview broadcasts come from BBC transmitters. Where I live, the only TV from an IBA transmitter is Channel 5 (and its 2 Freeview clones) and I'd expect them to pay me to watch that.

These "so many other options" you speak of still require payment of some kind.

Alas, nothing in life is free.

You want electric, phone usage, Internet, gas, etc, you pay. Why should television be any different?

'fraid so. If your TV set can receive any BBC channel even if you do not wish to watch it then you have to pay but you do get about 拢10 discount if you are blind!!!!

Ref the bit about being forced to subscribe to the Beeb - it doesn't mention that on the license - it doesn't even say anything about receiving TV signals. What it DOES say is that it allows you TO USE TV RECEIVING APPARATUS - and nothing about what you can or cannot watch ! ! !
