Why do Americans say Merry Christmas and British people say Happy Christmas?

I've wondered that since I heard John Lennon say it.

The British people say Happy Christmas as a greeting and "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" when writing their christmas cards. Either is great to hear.

Because we as Americans are so full of phoniness.

English accent is a bit shakey with R's maybe thats why.

because the British have more gumption.

because the english have forgoten that happy is used for easter, "happy easter", they've just gotten confused.

i think it is just how they say it there, our english and theirs are often quite different. i adore them and i think how they say it is nice.

Not all British people say happy christmas were i live everyone says merry christmas its just because people like saying happy christmas and some people say merry christmas nothings wrong with it. =)
