I want to have a theme party. It originally started out as a 70s theme party, but I wanted music from the 70s and 80s and maybe some Motown from the 60s.
"Soul Train" included all the genres and dress styles (OK, not the 60s) that I would like to include.
Does anyone have any ideas to help me get this party started?I have approximately one month; the date is January 19, 2008.
I've been looking for Soul Train posters without success. I want to do the magnetic question board if I can find a nice size one.
For all you Soul Train lovers or party planers, please help! You absolutely must have the Soul Train theme song by The Three Degrees/ MFSB- T.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelphia). It's an instrumental and it is the bomb.
You should have the game where the dancers unscramble letters and you have to do the soul train line. People should come dressed in their 70s outfits. Check out You Tube for some ideas. Here is the link to my favorite soul train video which has the song, TSOP.

Good Luck with the party. It sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe you can blow up a big picture of Don Cornelius? It wouldn't be a Soul Train party without the scramble board! How about makin everyone wear clothes from the 70's and 80's, also try to go buy a big flat board from Hobby Lobby and then you can get the words to unscramble...Make sure you include a soul train line and have someone act like the host Don C...Have fun You HAVE to play the ELECTRIC SLIDE!!!!
And one song that you know EVERYONE will know...something that we all group up with listening in our house and was the "anthem" back in our parents day... something with by the Temptations, Al Green, Patti LaBelle, or maybe Marvin?... try a dry a dry erase board, some of them are magnetic
for 70's music play songs from parliament, supremes, james brown, smokey robinson and maybe the temptations.
for 80's music how about rick james, prince, michael jackson, teena marie, mary jane girls, and chaka khan.
also give your guests ready for the party you should make some flyers to pass out like these: http://toledohiphop.org/images/old_schoo...
good luck with your party, it sounds fun! A disco ball, the light skinned guy with the cane, the Asian girl, and maybe some polyester clothes. Electric Slide is cool, but is more eighties than anything else. If the crowd is older than their 30's play Van McCoy - "The Hustle" or BT Express - "Express".
I'm a DJ that specializes in old school parties, so I know what I'm speaking about. Check out the mix cd's on my website: www.disconnexions.com to see the type of music that should be played.
For a Soul Train type party, make note of the songs on Vols 4, 7, 9 and 14 for disco and Vols 6, 15, and 20 for the 80's versions.
I would suggest making large letters out of poster board and creating the soul train log. You can put that up. The soul train scramble board could simply be a magnetic board with colred poster board behind it.
Find some afro wigs and do it up. Don't forget to do the Soul Train Line at least once. Announce it to the audience beforehand and divide the groups into male and females and let them go down the line together.
Possible Soul Train line songs: Rick James - Give It To Me Baby, Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Teddy Pendergrass - Get Up Get Funky Get Loose, GQ - Disco Nights, Jacksons - Blame It On The Boogie
DJ X-MAN
disconnexions.com I was addicted to soul train check and see if they have a web site..a pic of the Great Don Cornelius a pic of the train research the music played on soul train and the commercials back then and try getting a few of the products then and now........if you could find someone who could imitate Don voice record it and play during party have fun Pick up a Soul Train poster. Try e-bay.com or shop.com
I would also suggest to try stores that sell Afrocentric products.
Make sure that you order afros or jheri curl wigs.Soul Train was known for their hair styles. You can go to the wig shop or to your vintage clothing store. If you live near a city they should be able to have it.
Pick out music you believe soul train dancers would dance too. My suggestion is try every Earth, Wind, and Fire songs, Donna Summers is pretty good, Chaka Khan and so on.
Good Luck with your party |
